This week's big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he'll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you're having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.
In other news: Your baby's stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body's growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby's liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it's doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can't feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist's hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.
Oh my gosh! I'm in my second trimester! This is so exciting! To know that I've already made it through 1/3 of this whole journey - hooray! I'm still feeling great, just a little tired here and there, but honestly I think that's getting better. And it should be getting better. I know that most people say that you feel your best during your second trimester and so I'm hoping the same holds true for me. I'm so very thankful and blessed to have not experienced any awful symptoms so far and I'm just praying that it continues!
We're finally telling the rest of our extended family this Sunday - my aunts, uncles and cousins. I cannot wait to tell them because I know they will be just as excited as we are. So I am really counting down the days until Sunday.
We are only 2.5 weeks out from our next ultrasound and I honestly cannot wait. I don't know if this is common among first time pregnancies or if it's just because I'm not having any symptoms, but sometimes I just have a hard time believing that I'm really pregnant since I'm not feeling anything yet. But seeing those ultrasounds every month and getting to watch little Nugget move and kick, just makes it all so much more real! I can't wait to see him (or her) this month and see how much he/she has grown! I'll be 16 weeks then and maybe there might be a chance to find out the gender. I'm wishing that point would hurry along, because I'm ready to start planning out my nursery!!! Time just moves so slow these days! :) But I know that as soon as Nugget is born, the time is just going to FLY, so I'm thankful for the time now while I have it.
